John F. Barnes, the pioneer of Myofascial Release therapy, stated many times Without Awareness, There is No Choice.” Those words have resonated with us since we started our deep immersions into the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach®. They capture a profound truth: lasting healing cannot begin until we become aware of what we are physically, emotionally, and energetically holding in our bodies.
The Everyday Loss of Awareness
Most of us have experienced driving somewhere and arriving with little or no memory of the journey. Our mind was elsewhere, lost in thought, conversation, or worry, and we dissociated from the present moment. This temporary “autopilot” state is harmless in daily life, but it reveals how easily awareness can slip away.
The same dissociation happens on a deeper level when we experience injury, trauma, or chronic stress. In moments of pain or overwhelm, whether from a car accident, sports injury, surgery, or emotional trauma, the mind and body employ a protective survival strategy: they seal off awareness of the unpleasant sensations. We may consciously ignore a painful area, or the dissociation happens subconsciously. In extreme cases, the body shuts down awareness entirely, leading to loss of consciousness or even coma.
We can treat the visible physical damage. Muscles and tendons can be repaired, bones mended, and scars minimized. Often, we return to our previous activities and appear “nearly the same” on the outside. Yet something feels different. Movement isn’t as fluid. A nagging sensation lingers. We ask ourselves, “Why can’t I feel like I did before?”
The answer lies in the fascial system.
The Fascia Holds Everything
Fascia is a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and penetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, organ, and cell in the body. When trauma occurs, whether it is physical or emotional, real or imagined, the fascia tightens and solidifies to protect us, creating restrictions that can exert tremendous pressure (up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, according to K. Katake’s 1961 study).
These restrictions don’t just affect the injury site. Because fascia is continuous, a restriction in one area creates compensatory patterns throughout the entire body. Over time, these patterns can become unconscious holding patterns. We may lose awareness of the tension we carry because the body has adapted around it as a new “normal.”
Without awareness of these holding patterns, we have no true choice to release them.
Awareness Precedes Choice
John Barnes teaches that authentic healing requires reconnecting with the sensations we once dissociated from. Myofascial Release therapy creates the safe, gentle space needed for this reconnection.
During a session at Inner Essence Myofascial Release in Oshawa, sustained, gentle pressure is applied to fascial restrictions. As the fascia begins to release, clients often become aware of long-forgotten sensations, memories, or emotions that were “sealed off” at the time of injury or trauma. This emergence is not random, it is the body’s innate intelligence guiding the healing process when given the opportunity.
With awareness comes choice.
For the first time, clients can consciously choose to let go of the protective holding pattern that was once necessary for survival but is no longer serving them. This is not a forced release; it is a gentle, self-directed unwinding. The body releases only what it is ready to release, at the pace it determines is safe.
The Transformative Power of Choice
When clients experience this conscious letting-go, profound shifts occur:
- Chronic pain that resisted traditional treatment begins to ease
- Restricted movement becomes fluid again
- Emotional weight that felt heavy for years lightens
- A deeper sense of resilience and body connection emerges
One client shared after a series of sessions: “I didn’t realize how much I was bracing my body every day until I felt what it was like to stop. For the first time in years, I feel like I’m truly inhabiting my body instead of just living in it.”
This is the essence of authentic healing: moving from unconscious holding to conscious choice.
